Hohle Gasse

According to the `White Book of Sarnen`, William Tell assassinated the Habsburgian bailiff Gessler at the Hohle Gasse. According to Ägidius Tschudi, a chapel was bulit to commemorate this event around 1530 and was subsequently re-built around 1638. The Tells-Kapelle (Tell`s Chapel) (Patronage: St. Margareta and later 14 emergency helpers) received an altarpiece from Caspar Wolf in 1760. Hans Bachmann painted the `Death of Gessler` on the façade of the chapel in 1905 and the `Death of Tell` in Schächenbach in the interior.

The `Hohle Gasse` offers guests easily digestible, yet impressive information about the history and stories revolving around this historical monument. Thanks to the contemporary information pavilion, the history of William Tell at the Hohle Gasse can be heard, seen, felt, and experienced!
