Village Museum

Ortsmuseum Gersau,  Dorfstrasse 14,  6442 Gersau

Opened in 1984, this museum is situated in one of the most historic buildings in Gersau. The village museum is located in the former town hall of the «free republic» of 1745, which was once the smallest republic in the world.

Beschreibung

Did you know that Gersau was once the smallest republic in the world? They even had their own army and legal system. You can learn all about this historical oddity in this museum. The Swedish national author August Strindberg spent some time in Gersau himself and details about his stay are also presented here. A new addition to the museum is an exhibition about tourism in earlier times. In addition, visitors will encounter a photo exhibition about Stadivari instruments presented by the Habisreutinger Foundation, a permanent exhibition about the local author Josef Maria Camenzing and details regarding musican and composer Benno Ammann. One room also presents details about how silk was introduced to Gersau.

Entrance is free-of-charge although donations are welcome and can be made at the door.
